REMARKABLE LINCOLN SIGNED APPOINTMENT FOR HERO COMMANDER WHO HELD THE UNION LINE AT GETTYSBURG
16th President of the United States, ABRAHAM LINCOLN, autograph Civil War date vellum military appointment for Civil War hero Charles R. Coster. Dated June 8, 1863, Lincoln appoints Coster to the rank of "Captain in the Twelfth Regiment of Infantry in the Service of the United States", and signs the appointment with bold, full signature as "Abraham Lincoln". Countersigned by Edwin M. Stanton as Secretary of War. With intact original green paper seal at top left, and patriotic vignettes at the top and bottom. Coster distinguished himself with bravery at Gettysburg, sacrificing his command to delay Confederate forces long enough for the Army of the Potomac to secure Cemetery Hill and save the battle.
Just 5 days after the firing on Fort Sumter, Coster enlisted as a Private and later participated in the Battle of Chancellorsville. In May 1863, Coster's regiment joined Colonel Buschbeck's brigade, where he replaced the commanding officer in June. In this capacity, he participated in the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, which lasted three days, from July 1st - 3rd, 1863. On the first day of Gettysburg Coster valiantly protected the retreat of the Union troops, supporting the batteries on Cemetery Hill. During the retreat of Union troops Coster was sent to delay Confederate forces from overrunning the defensive line - outnumbered nearly 3 to 1 by Confederate forces and outflanked on both ends of their line, Coster's troops sustained nearly 600 casualties. One of the units Coster commanded (The 154th New York) had lost 77 percent of its total force in the engagement alone. Today, a Gettysburg historical monument, a street, and mural attest to Coster's bravery and courage under fire.
