17th President of the United States ANDREW JOHNSON and Secretary of War EDWIN STANTON partially printed U.S. Military Appointment Washington, D.C.; September 10, 1866 with stamped signatures of Johnson as President and Stanton as Secretary of War. Both men used official ink stamps to "sign" their names. Blue paper seal at the top left, along with patriotic vignettes at the top and bottom.

In 1857, while returning from Washington, Johnson's train derailed, causing serious damage to his right arm. This injury would trouble him in the years to come, necessitating the use of an ink stamp signature for his official documents.

President Johnson promotes James Curtis to the rank of "Major by Brevet....for gallant and meritorious service at the Battle of Shiloh, Tennessee, and during the Atlanta campaign." Signed with stamped signature, "Andrew Johnson." Countersigned with a stamped signature, "Edwin Stanton."

Curtis graduated from West Point and enlisted in the United States Army in 1851, serving until 1857. He reentered military service at the outbreak of the Civil War, receiving a commission as First Lieutenant in the Fifteenth Regiment of Infantry. In October of 1861, he was promoted to Captain. On April 7, 1862, during the Battle of Shiloh, the Fifteenth Regiment distinguished itself as the first newly formed infantry unit to engage in combat in the Civil War. By the war's end, the regiment had fought in twenty-two major engagements, including Shiloh, Stone's River, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, and the Atlanta Campaign. In recognition of his service, Curtis was brevetted to the rank of Major in 1866. He retired in 1876 as a Major, finally drawing his twenty-five year military career to a close.
