Santa Anna Letter Signed as President to the Husband of His Illegitimate Daughter

Mexican President, military leader and Alamo mission attacker General Antonio López de Santa Anna, known simply as "Santa Anna", autograph letter signed as President to his illegitimate daughter's husband, Pedro Pablo Cortez on Presidente de la Republica letterhead, dated September 11, 1844 from the National Palace in Tacubaya. With intact original 'ASL' wax seal.

The letter is in the hand of a secretary but authentically signed by Santa Anna at the conclusion:

"My dear Pedro:
Since I must leave for El Encero this coming Monday, there we will talk about the request of Don Aimas Rebolledo, whose matter concerns the favor of (??) of the current month.
Know you are held in affection.
Father

A. L. de Santa Anna"


Santa Anna was well known for being unfaithful. Consequently, he admitted to having fathered four illegitimate children – all mentioned in his final will. Recent scholars have found three more illegitimate children: Pedro Lopez de Santa Anna, Angel, and Agustina Rosa Lopez de Santa Anna. Even though Santa Anna did not mention these three in his final will, he was known for being kind to them, and they were known for being loyal to him. In 1843, Agustina lived with her husband, Lt. Col. Pedro Pablo Cortez, the recipient of this letter and the obvious recipient of the affections of the president.

El Encero was Santa Anna's famous hacienda in Veracruz. Just three months later, in December 1844, the embattled Santa Anna would find himself arrested in a military coup at the outbreak of the U.S. - Mexico war and exiled to Cuba.


Today, Santa Anna is perhaps best remembered for his infamous bloody victory over the Texans at the Alamo, and later his defeat and capture by Sam Houston at San Jacinto in 1836.
