Significant Benjamin Franklin Signed Document While Serving as a Delegate to the Constitutional Convention!


Founding Father, statesman, printer, inventor and scientist BENJAMIN FRANKLIN authentic autograph partly printed Pennsylvania land grant on vellum signed "B. FRANKLIN" as President of the Supreme Executive Council of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, a role similar to that of Governor. Using a quill pen, Franklin signs at left under the large embossed 8 point seal. Countersigned by James Trimble as Deputy Secretary.


Signed by Franklin while also serving as a Pennsylvania delegate to the Constitutional Convention, then being held in another room at the Pennsylvania State House (now Independence Hall). Franklin would go on to sign the new Federal Constitution just five months after this document.


The document is dated April 16, 1787, Franklin grants Joshua Dickinson "...a certain tract of land called Hopewell". Dickinson is listed as paying 700 pounds and 9 shillings for the stated tract in northwest Dunbar Twp., Fayette Co, PA. 


According to a biography of the recipient - Joshua Dickinson was an early pioneer settler of the Dunbar, Pennsylvania region. According to the account, he traveled alone on foot through the rugged frontier wilderness and established a homestead overlooking the Youghiogheny River. The narrative notes that tensions between settlers and local Native American tribes led Dickinson to temporarily retreat before later returning to cultivate the land. He and his wife reportedly lived with constant vigilance while building their homestead in the remote Pennsylvania wilderness.

Condition is as shown, consistent with the age, use, handling and storage of a nearly 240 year old document. Vintage dark walnut wood framed display in good condition, nicely mounted, to an overall size of appx. 26.75" x 24.75". Otherwise very good condition. Framed using conservation-grade, museum quality 98% UV-blocking heavyweight acrylic pane. Please review images carefully for exact condition.
