Legendary "Dracula" author BRAM STOKER scarce handwritten letter dated April 19, 1901 on Lyceum Theater embossed letterhead and signed at the conclusion in full as "Bram Stoker".

Although Stoker had already published his magnum opus "Dracula" back in 1897, it never achieved the global success it now enjoys today. During his lifetime Stoker was perhaps better known as the personal assistant of famed Victorian actor Sir Henry Irving, and business manager of the Lyceum Theater in London, which Irving owned. Literary scholars have theorized that Stoker's tumultuous friendship with the charismatic Irving is said to be the true inspiration for the Gothic horror story of Van Helsing and his nemesis, Dracula.

Stoker writes:

"Private

Dear Mr. Tupper
Can you tell me who is secretary to the presentation to Sir Spencer Ponsonby-Fane + where he is to be found?

Very sincerely
Bram Stoker"

The "Sir Spencer" Stoker was referring to was Sir Spencer Cecil Ponsonby-Fane, a British diplomat of the period, and an acquaintance of Irving's. On at least one occasion the Lord Chamberlain's office sent Sir Spencer to privately warn Irving that a controversial political play was likely to be censored, and should be withdrawn; A private communication of this sort was intended to avoid embarrassment and financial loss.
