History's legendary "Serpent Queen", influential Italian noblewoman and queen consort of France, CATHERINE de' MEDICI (1519 - 1589) autograph royal financial document on vellum circa 1567 signed simply, "Catherine" at middle left. With fine engraved portrait in antique frame, under glass.

Catherine signs a royal financial discharge – an official receipt and forgiveness of financial obligation for Monsieur Pierre de Picquet, a gentleman of the King's chamber. 1567 proved to be an especially problematic year for the wily queen regent, with Catherine navigating the outbreak of the Second War of Religion.

Catherine herself was the mother of three influential French Kings: Francis II, Charles IX and Henry III . In 1567, King Charles IX would only have been about 17 years old. Although he had technically been king since 1560, Catherine had served as regent as well as signatory on behalf of her young son. Much of the story of the young kings and their cunning queen mother were dramatized in the hit historical drama television series, The Serpent Queen.

Condition is as shown, appx. 24.75" x 13" as framed, with intersecting folds, heavy overall wrinkling, some scattered stains, a few small edge tears and losses, consistent with age, use, handling and display. Please review photos carefully. The lower right part of the document, probably blank, has been trimmed. Stains to the document and antique engraved portrait, a modern penciled line of text at lower left. Antique frame is in used condition, with typical associated wear. Sticker residue to glass at lower left.
