The dramatic Darwin portrait is based on a woodburytype photographic portrait Carte de Visite published by John G. Murdoch. The photographer is unknown - but it was likely one of a series taken by Elliot and Fry for Darwin's 1874 sitting (as he is wearing the same waistcoat and jacket as in those portraits).
