Superb Full Signature Darwin Letter to one of the Early Supporters of his Theory of Evolution, Seeking Enrollment for his Son
English Naturalist & Evolutionary Biologist CHARLES DARWIN scarce autograph letter signed on his personal Down House embossed letterhead, April 15 (circa 1866), to Sir William Robert Grove. Darwin was grateful for Grove's off of assistance in enrolling his son, George Howard Darwin, at the prestigious Lincoln's Inn to study Law.
The letter is in the hand of a secretary, but authentically signed by Darwin with a choice, rare full signature at the conclusion.
Lincoln's Inn is one of the four Inns of Court for English barristers and judges. To practice in England and Wales, an individual must belong to one of the four inns. Grove – a Lincoln's Inn alumni – was President of the British Association for the Advancement of Science for its meeting in Birmingham in 1866. Notably, he was also the first British Association president to announce his support for Darwin's fledgling theory of evolution by means of natural selection.
Darwin's letter to Grove reads:
"My dear Grove,
As you were so kind as to say that you would take the proper steps to enter my son George Howard Darwin at Lincoln's Inn I should be very much obliged if you would take the trouble. I suppose I shall hear from the Steward or someone about the payment of entrance and canteen money etc, and whether my son must attend to sign his name or any other ceremony,
With very sincere thanks for your kindness,
I remain yours very truly,
Charles Darwin"
