SCARCE EXTRACT FROM THE ORIGINAL MEETING NOTES OF THE CONTINENTAL CONGRESS
Irish-born Patriot, Founding Father of the United States and secretary to the Continental Congress, CHARLES THOMSON his scarce, original handwritten fragments pieced together from the minutes of the Journals of the Continental Congress. The excised section handwritten by Thomson likely dates to 1781, when the continental congress appointed a cloathier general.
As secretary, Thomson prepared the journals, and his and John Hancock's names were the only two to appear on the first printing of the United States Declaration of Independence. Thomson served as secretary of the Continental Congress during the entirety of its existence, from 1774-1789.
The position of cloathier general was created because the Continental Army was suffering from severe shortages of clothing and supplies. Soldiers were often without proper uniforms, shoes, or blankets, especially during harsh winters like the one at Valley Forge. We believe this extract to be from the election of John Moylan as cloathier general. Unlike James Mease, who was appointed cloathier general under George Washington’s authority in early 1777, John Moylan was formally elected by Congress itself through a ballot vote in 1781, the continental congress journal noting "Congress proceeded to the election of a cloathier general ; and, the ballots being taken, Mr. John Moylan was elected, having been previously nominated by Mr. [Thomas] Burke".
Thomson, the "Samuel Adams of Philadelphia" as John Adams declared, was one of the only two men to actually sign the Declaration of Independence on July 4. Thomson is also known for co-designing the Great Seal of the United States, and adding its Latin mottoes Annuit Coeptus and Novus ordo seclorum.
Thomson's meticulous, handwritten notes state:
"According to the order of the day Congress proceeded to the election of a cloathier gen'l and the ballots being taken..."
"...Extract from the minutes..."
"Charles Thomson, Sec'y"
