Dolley Madison (1768–1849) was the wife of the fourth U.S. President, James Madison, and served as First Lady from 1809 to 1817. A popular fixture in Washington social circles, she is best known for defining the social role of the First Lady, rescuing a famous portrait of George Washington from the advancing British Army during the War of 1812, and using charm to unite political rivals.
