Previously removed from another damaged source, the Nightingale inscription page has been subsequently rebound here to an antique original 1865 'Materia Medica' to create a new collectible edition featuring the authentic autograph of the fabled "Lady With The Lamp". The book itself, featuring remarkably preserved original interior pages, has been freshly rebound with new covers worthy of the finest executive or medical reference library.
The Essentials of Materia Medica and Therapeutics by Sir Alfred Baring Garrod, (published mid-19th century) was significant because it helped reshape medical pharmacology at a moment when medicine was moving from tradition toward science. For decades, the book was widely used in British and American medical education. Garrod was a leading physician and scientist best known for identifying uric acid as the cause of gout, as well as introducing chemical analysis into clinical medicine.
The Lea and Holloway Institute school was founded on the former Nightingale family estate. Florence Nightingale retained a strong connection with the property, later joining the school board. An avid reader herself, Nightingale was deeply interested in books, many later gifted by her to the school, both before and after her death.
