FDR's Alleged Mistress types a letter to the Bishop of Washington from FDR's future "Little White House" Retreat in Warm Springs, GA.
Franklin D. Roosevelt's deeply devoted private secretary, famously referred to by her initials "M.M." was Marguerite Alice "Missy" LeHand.DR and his inner political circle frequently used "M.M." as a shorthand signature and abbreviation in their correspondence and inter-office memos during his tenure as Governor of New York (1929–1932), and later at the White House. LeHand lived as a member of the Roosevelt family, managing household duties, traveling with FDR, and acting as his White House hostess when Eleanor Roosevelt was away.
Roosevelt responds to Reverend James Freeman, the Bishop of Washington regarding the building of the Washington National Cathedral, from his Warm Springs, GA retreat where he frequently sought relief from polio in the 88-degree mineral springs. Roosevelt first visited the resort in 1924, and later purchased it. Nicknamed the "Little White House" during his presidency, it was also where Roosevelt would tragically suffer his fatal stroke there on April 12, 1945.
In full,
"My Dear Bishop Freeman,
I had a nice talk with Mr. Lewis at the meeting in Newburgh before I left for Warm Springs, and I am very glad that he is doing such excellent work. I am, of course, glad that so many Masonic bodies and individuals are taking such fine interest in the building of the Washington Cathedral. I hope that this Autumn I may have an opportunity of going to Washington and seeing the excellent progress which you have made during these past few years.
Very sincerely yours,
Franklin D. Roosevelt"
