Roosevelt was encouraged to run for Governor by New York Governor Al Smith, who by then was the nominee in the 1928 Presidential election. Roosevelt would win by a slim margin, serving as Governor from 1929 - 1932. Roosevelt's efforts as governor to address the effects of the depression in his own state established him as the front-runner for the 1932 Democratic presidential nomination, which he would go on to win later that year.
