A RARE VOLUME FROM PRESIDENT FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT'S PERSONAL STAMP COLLECTION DATED BY HIM AT THE WHITE HOUSE
32nd President of the United States, FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT his personal stamp album from the WHITE HOUSE in original luxe red leather springback binder with signed interior fly leaf annotated in FDR's hand, "The White House 1939" binder page. 28 total pages featuring several dozen stamps, proof sheets, and information on the stamps.
The binder, housing FDR's stamps, souvenir sheets & ephemera from the Czecho-Slovak Pavilion at the 1939 World's Fair, was part of the President's personal collection at the White House, and later part of his estate upon his death in 1945.
Excellent provenance, stamped on the penultimate page "FROM THE FRANKLIN D ROOSEVELT COLLECTION AUCTIONED FEB., APRIL, 1946 BY H. R. HARMER, INC. N.Y." Stamps featured prominently by the FDR Presidential library in conjunction with the NATIONAL ARCHIVES also bear the same stamping on the back. See reference photo for details.
The album originates from the landmark 1946 sale of Roosevelt's stamp collection: Roosevelt famously devoted an hour or two daily to his prized collection. An avid, lifelong collector who amassed over a million stamps, after his death, stamps were found "all over the White House". With no specific provision in his will for disposal the stamps were sent to auction by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, first appearing at H.R. Harmer international stamp auctioneers in 1946.
The Roosevelt album features various colors and types of overprints and small folders entitled, "Truth prevails Czecho-Slovakia Will Rise Again" on several different souvenir sheets used as fundraisers as Czechoslovakia was occupied by Germany at the time.
The FDR autograph has been thoroughly examined and CERTIFIED AUTHENTIC BY PSA/DNA EXPERT EXAMINATION. An investment-quality acquisition for any collection.
