American Army Officer and statesman, General GEORGE C. MARSHALL autograph "Gen. George C. Marshall / Chief of Staff" First Day Cover featuring an inset cut signature removed from an Air Mail letter. With original lavender "V / Win The War" 3¢ canceled stamp.
Marshall rose through the Army ranks to become Chief of Staff under presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman, then served as Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense under Truman. Winston Churchill credited Marshall as the "organizer of victory" for his leadership of the Allies in WWII. As Secretary of State, Marshall advocated for a U.S. commitment to post-war European recovery, in what became know as the Marshall Plan. In recognition of his work, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953, the only Army general to ever receive the honor.
