Scarce, fine autograph Society of Cincinnati document on vellum. Dated December 6, 1785, the document is issued to John H. Wendell, Esq. a prominent officer in the New York line of the Continental Army. A rare document signed by Washington for one of his loyal Officers who fought valiantly alongside him during the revolution.

In 1776, at the outbreak of the War, John H. Wendell volunteered and was subsequently commissioned a captain in the New York Regiment, he fought meritoriously in the battle of Monmouth, served at Saratoga, and on the infamous Clinton-Sullivan expedition of 1779. An American patriot through and through, Wendell was known for dressing in Revolutionary War-era clothing for the remainder of his life, affectionately referred to as the "last of the cocked hats".

Condition is as shown with stains and toning consistent age, use and handling. Document measures 14" x 20.5" and has been mounted to fabric by 19th c. collector.
