Guaranteed Authentic
ONE OF THE FINEST AUTOGRAPHS OF WASHINGTON WE HAVE OFFERED! AN EXCELLENT ADDRESS PANEL FROM AMERICA'S FOUNDING FATHER TO AMERICA'S PREEMINENT PAINTER.
First President of the United States, American Patriot, and Founding Father, GEORGE WASHINGTON scarce, hand-addressed, free frank envelope panel to "Mr. Charles W. Peale / Philadelphia", and signed at lower left with his customary signature as "Go. Washington". According to an annotation at the bottom of the envelope in the hand of the recipient's son, this was signed by Washington in "1787", right around the time of the constitutional convention!
The Washington address panel has excellent provenance and is secondarily endorsed and authentically signed by Charles Wilson Peale's son, renowned American artist, REMBRANDT PEALE at lower right. Rembrandt Peale is best remembered for his iconic "Portrait of George Washington". Rembrandt Peale gifts the George Washington signed address panel to a collector, "Presented Mr. Thomas Herring by Rembrandt Peale".
Before modern postage systems, presidents and other officials had the privilege of "franking" mail—signing the envelope in place of a stamp—to communicate official matters for free. These signed envelopes are now highly collectible because they contain the authentic signature of the president and are often tied to historical correspondence.
In 1787, Charles Willson Peale introduced his son Rembrandt to George Washington, and the young artist watched his father paint the future president. In 1795, the 17-year old Rembrand painted an aging Washington; the portrait was well received, and Rembrandt had made his debut. In 1824, Peale painted the Patriæ Pater, in which a rectangle supporting an oval wreath surrounds the eye-catching image of George Washington. It was the most successful painting of Peale's 50-year career.
Charles Willson Peale was an American painter, military officer, scientist and naturalist. A prolific artist, he completed scores of portraits of historic figures including Benjamin Franklin, John Hancock, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton as well as no less than 60 portraits of Washington, including the famed "Washington at Princeton" (1779) which sold for a record $21.3 million in 2005.
