SCARCE WASHINGTON'S FAREWELL ADDRESS PRINTED BROADSIDE

"Address of the Late General George Washington, to the Citizens of the United States, on declining a re-election to the Office of President". Hartford: Hudson and Goodwin, September 17, 1796. Printed broadside, circa 1800, in vintage framed display featuring striking hand-painted eagle and American flag bunting, approx. 18" x 22" framed to an overall size of 27" x 32".

Printed in five columns; Signed in print "George Washington. United States, 17th Sept. 1796."

Washington originally penned this farewell address to the nation in 1796 at the end of his second term as President. He announces his intention to decline a third term in office and reflects on the current political landscape and his eight years in office.

First published in 1796 in David C. Claypoole's American Daily Advertiser , it was reprinted immediately in newspapers and pamphlets, and then widely reprinted again after Washington's death in 1799. A true foundational document of American political thought, and widely considered one of the most important documents in U.S. history, the Address eventually faded from national memory. More recently, however, it regained some popular awareness when lines from the address were used in the song "One Last Time" in the hit Broadway musical, "HAMILTON".

See photos for condition; Condition is as shown. Uneven toning, scattered spotting. Creased both horizontally and vertically. Scattered paper loss, worm holes and pin holes, as shown. Some scuffs and wear to vintage frame, consistent with age, use and display.
