Ford became the 38th U.S. President on August 9, 1974 following Richard Nixon's resignation due to the Watergate scandal. For is the only person to hold the Presidency without being elected to it or the Vice Presidency, having been appointed VP in 1973 after Spiro Agnew resigned.
