HENRY KNOX LETTER SIGNED OBTAINING PENSION FOR A BATTLE OF MONMOUTH REVOLUTIONARY WAR VETERAN

American military officer and Founding Father, HENRY KNOX  letter signed as Secretary of War during the George Washington administration. The letter is written on "War Office" letterhead and signed, "H. Knox", dated May 8, 1790.

A trusted advisor and Revolutionary War General and Chief of Artillery in the Continental Army in all of George Washington's campaigns, Knox later served as 1st United States Secretary of War under President Washington from 1785 - 1794.

Knox acknowledges receipt of a letter from Comptroller John Nicholson, Esq. "...stating the case of one John Dixon a pensioner of the United States residing in the State of Pennsylvania" and advising that "the necessary arrangements shall be made respecting a provision for him". While the letter appears to be in a secretarial hand, the correction 'respecting a' appears to be in Knox's hand, Knox aditionally authentically signs the letter at the conclusion "H Knox".

According to the US, Pennsylvania Veterans Card Files, 1775-1916, John Dixon was a soldier serving in the 4th Pennsylvania regiment during the American Revolutionary War. According to the record Dixon served from 1777 - 1779, in June of 1778 his regiment was present at the Battle of Monmouth. Although outnumbered two-to-one, the Continental Army was able to beat the British army to a a stalemate.

The same year our letter is written, Knox's fledgling United States Army would launch its first major offensive against Native American nations in the Northwest Territory. The expedition aimed to punish tribes for raids that had killed roughly 1,500 American settlers between 1784 and 1789, and to open the Northwest Territory for American expansion.
