AUTHENTIC FRAGMENT OF HINDENBURG'S BURNED OUTER SKIN FROM THE SOLDIER WHO GUARDED IT
AN EXCEPTIONAL HISTORICAL ARTIFACT:
A genuine fragment of the HINDENBURG's outer skin removed from a burned swatch from the collection of Pvt. Paul A. Vasques – the man assigned to watch over the wreckage. The Signaturist is pleased to offer this exclusive double-sided LIMITED EDITION custom display sheet with genuine HINDENBURG fragment – WHILE SUPPLIES LAST!
The Vasques collection included both an original Type 1 photo of the crashed zepellin as well as a Hindenburg souvenir postcard Pvt. Vasques sent home dated just one week later – perhaps one of the best-documented authentic fragments ever offered for sale.
The HINDENBURG was a German commercial passenger-carrying rigid airship, and the largest zeppelin ever built. At 6:25 p.m. EST on May 6, 1937, while approaching the Lakehurst, NJ Naval Station’s mooring mast between storms, the hydrogen gas-filled zeppelin caught fire and was destroyed during its attempt to dock with its mooring mast. The accident caused 35 fatalities (13 passengers and 22 crewmen) among the 97 people on board (36 passengers and 61 crewmen), and an additional fatality on the ground.
PROVENANCE:
Following the crash, Pvt. Paul A. Vasques is assigned to watch over the Hindenburg wreckage. On the back of a Hindenburg souvenir postcard owned by The Signaturist dated May 13, 1937 Vasques writes home to his mother, “I am getting tired of guarding that burned dirigible.”
Along with the photo and postcard, the charred fragment of the zepellin’s charred outer skin, annotated by Vasques, is one of the finest, best documented, authentic Hindenburg artifacts to ever come to market.
PLEASE NOTE: the original postcard and larger fabric swatch shown are NOT included in this purchase and are only provided here FOR REFERENCE ONLY. However, both items are depicted on the custom display sheet, as shown.
