Martyred 20th President of the United States JAMES A. GARFIELD signed cabinet card desirably autographed by Garfield directly on the photo. The portrait was originally taken by Edward Beirstadt in 1875 while Garfield was serving as a member of the House of Representatives. Garfield has signed the portrait in his typical fashion "J. a. Garfield". Presidential signed images are highly valued by collectors. Having been assassinated in his first months in office one can imagine how few signed images of Garfield exist.

PSA/DNA expert analysis has rated the autograph with the highly coveted GEM MINT 10. Under PSA's exacting autograph grading standards a Gem Mint 10 example "is a virtually perfect autograph. Attributes include bold writing with the absence of skipping or retracing by the original signer or otherwise..." In addition, "the autograph must be strong and clear...as well as aesthetically beautiful in terms of placement and representative of the common/traditional autograph patterns of that person."
