Fourth President of the United States JAMES MADISON hand-addressed and signed autograph Free Frank front panel, dated August 29 from Orange County, Virginia to James B. Longacre in Philadelphia. With desirable intact original red wax seal. Madison writes, "Free James Madison / James B. Longacre / Philadelphia" creating a secondary abbreviated signature by virtue of the second "James" in Longacre's name.

James Barton Longacre was an American portraitist and engraver and the fourth Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. Longacre is best-known for designing the Indian Head Cent. Longacre, who traveled widely in the United States to sketch subjects from life, sketched then-President Jackson, as well as the former 82-year old President Madison, both in July 1833.
