Monroe served as President from March 1817 to March 1825. Richard M. Johnson would later serve as Vice President of the United States from March 1837 to March 1841 under President Martin Van Buren.
A handwritten pencil notation on the back of the envelope ("1822 as President") dates the Free Frank to 1822 – perhaps based on the former internal letter contents.

Monroe was the last of the Founding Fathers to serve as President. His greatest achievement as a diplomat was his negotiation of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Elected President of the United States in 1816 and 1820, Monroe resolved long-standing grievances with the British, acquired Florida from Spain in 1819, and proclaimed the "Monroe Doctrine" in 1823.
