Two Presidents Sign a Scalloped Ship’s Passport For the Merchant Ship SELMA
Impressive ship's passport document signed by both 5th President JAMES MONROE and Secretary of State (and future 6th President) JOHN QUINCY ADAMS, folio on vellum, Washington, January, 1825, in handsome vintage framed display with engraving at top of a sailing ship and a harbor scene with a lighthouse. The passport was for the merchant Ship SELMA of New York, and master Thomas Longfield with a crew of 13 men. Countersigned by Adam Lewis, the Collector for the Port of Alabama.
The passport authorized the ship, "To pass with her Company, Passengers, Goods, and Merchandize (sic), without any hinderance, seizure of molestation..." Typically, these documents were signed in Washington, D.C., by President Monroe and Secretary of State Adams, and sent to a United States port to be filled out, signed, and issued from there by the Collector of the Port. The Collector, or an assistant, would fill in the name of the ship and all the required information.
John Quincy Adams was Monroe's only Secretary of State, serving from 1817 until 1825 when he succeeded Madison as President.
The MONROE & ADAMS ship's passport has been thoroughly reviewed and CERTIFIED AUTHENTIC BY PSA/DNA EXPERT EXAMINATION. UNCONDITIONALLY GUARANTEED GENUINE. Purchase includes full original PSA/DNA Letter of Authenticity.
