Pulitzer Prize Winning WWII Combat Photographer JOE ROSENTHAL autograph RAISING THE FLAG ON IWO JIMA vintage silver gelatin photo signed. Rosenthal inscribes, "Best wishes to Kenny Feller from Joe Rosenthal" beneath the image. A vintage 3¢ stamp bearing Rosenthal's dramatic image has also been affixed at upper right. Reverse of photo bears partially obscured Associated Press stamp.

Taken during the 1945 battle of Iwo Jima, Rosenthal's iconic picture of six Marines raising the U.S. flag atop Mount Suribachi has become one of the best-known photographs of the war, and was even replicated as the United States Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington County, Virginia. Three of the 6 soldiers depicted would later be killed in action during the ferocious battle. Later that year, the dramatic image would earn Rosenthal the Pulitzer Prize.
