German poet, playwright, novelist, scientist, statesman, theater director and critic, JOHANN WOLFGANG von GOETHE letter signed from Weimar, Grand Ducal Saxon Supervision of all direct institutions for science and art, dated January 4, 1830 to Friedrich Siegmund Voigt, Court Councilor and Director of the Botanical Gardens in Jena, signed JWv Goethe.  Intact red wax seal. The letter is in the hand of a secretary, but authentically signed by Goethe at conclusion.

Goethe took up residence in Weimar in 1775 following the success of his first novel. In Weimar, he sat on the War and Highway commissions, and also contributed to the planning of Weimar's Botanical Gardens and the rebuilding of its Ducal Palace, among other responsibilities.

Goethe writes regarding the firewood allowance for the Botanical Garden, and reports how the court gardener Baumann writes to Weimar to request an exception that more money should be allocated to heat the greenhouses due to the harsh winter, but Goethe cautions the administration must compensate for the additional expenditure in the following year through savings. He then also takes the opportunity to complain that in the future the court gardener should address such concerns directly to the Director of the Botanical Garden.
