Sixth President of the United States JOHN QUINCY ADAMS striking reproduction portrait with cut signature affixed to custom card. A very desirable and bold signature from Quincy Adams who adds a line above and below his signature.
This style of signature from Quincy Adams with the added lines at top and bottom was almost certainly removed from a free frank envelope signed by Adams. Before modern postage systems, presidents and other officials had the privilege of "franking" mail—signing the envelope in place of a stamp—to communicate official matters for free. These signed envelopes are now highly collectible because they contain the authentic signature of the president and are often tied to historical correspondence.
The portrait depicts Adams, seated facing left, hands folded. According to the Metropolitan Museum of Art web site, this image is a copy of a lost daguerrotype of Adams taken by Philip Haas ca. 1843. However, conflicting reports says it was taken ca. 1847, a year before Adams' death.
