EXCEPTIONALLY RARE – JUST 5 COPLEY AUTOGRAPHS HAVE APPEARED AT AUCTION IN THE PAST 25 YEARS!

Renowned Colonial American Painter JOHN SINGLETON COPLEY scarce signed book from his personal library. Copley appends his ownership signature and "1811" date to the original bookplate of the former owner, British writer, minister and translator, Charles Dunster.  An autograph notation in Copley's hand ("1-18") appears at the top corner of the front flyleaf. Originally auctioned at Christie's in 2006 and with accompanying catalog from the auction featuring the book.

Notable for Copley's autograph, the book is however an even rarer survival from his personal library: his copy of Jonathan Toup's Emendationes in Suidamet Hesychium et Alios Lexicographis Graecos - Vol I, ed. by Richard Porson (Oxford: The Clarendon Press, 1790).

The most celebrated American artist of the 18th century, Copley achieved great success first as a portraitist in Massachusetts, later as a history painter in England. Though friendly to the Massachusetts patriots, he had married into the family of Governor Thomas Gage. Copley had no interest in taking sides, but felt the violence and tumult of revolution made it impossible for him to continue his work in America. He emigrated to Britain in June 1774, and spent the remainder of his life there. Today, Copley is perhaps best known for his brilliant portraits of Founding Fathers and Revolutionary leaders, JOHN HANCOCK, SAMUEL ADAMS, PAUL REVERE and his dramatic painting, "Watson and the Shark".
