American Politician, military officer and Governor of Connecticut, JONATHAN TRUMBULL, Jr. authentic autograph cut from the partial closing of a document in which Trumbull acknowledges President Adams letter alerting him of the impending inauguration of 3rd President, Thomas Jefferson. Acknowledging the communication from the President, Trumbull signs at conclusion with a fine large signature and flourish.
In the bureaucratic language of the day, this was the standard message the states would receive to alert them to an impending Presidential inauguration with the convening of the Senate, then held on March 4; 1801 marked the end of Adams term and the Senate-led Inauguration of President Thomas Jefferson:
"The President of the United States having thot proper to convene the Senate of the United States on Wednesday the 4th of March next to receive, consider + act upon any communications which may be then made to them touching the public interest of the UStates. It becomes necessary for the Governor + Council to meet, consider +decide on the expedience of making..."
Trumbull was elected 20th Governor of Connecticut in 1797. He was reelected each year until he died in office in 1809. A resident of Lebanon, CT he is buried at the Trumbull Cemetery there.
Continuing the family's tradition of public service, Trumbull, Jr. was the second son of Jonathan Trumbull, Sr. (the colonial 16th Governor of Connecticut), a military aide-de-camp of General George Washington, served as the 20th Governor of Connecticut, Speaker of the United States House of Representatives and United States Senator from Connecticut, His brother, John Trumbull was a noted painter of the American Revolution.
