Last Monarch to rule the American colonies, KING GEORGE III of England, handsome signed Royal appointment on vellum dated 1809, during his slow descent into madness when his signatures got noticeably sloppier. George signs at upper left with a visibly altered signature above the intact royal seals.
By 1809, the year of his Jubilee marking the start of his 50th year of reign, George was already virtually blind with cataracts and in constant pain from rheumatism. The following year he suffered a dangerous relapse into his mental disorder and became seriously ill, and by 1811 – just two years after he signed this document – George would be declared mentally insane.
Today, George III is perhaps best known for having passed an act taxing tea in the colonies. Angered, the Americans complained of taxation without representation and staged the Boston Tea Party, leading to the start of the American Revolution in April 1775 with the Battles of Lexington and Concord.
