Handwritten document by the legendary Marquis de Lafayette, circa 1811. This unsigned accounting document, penned entirely in Lafayette’s hand, details amounts owed to several powerful men of the early 19th century, including Alexander Baring, the financier who helped broker the Louisiana Purchase, and John Parish, a prominent merchant-banker active during the Revolutionary War period.
The document records acreages tied to these payments and other debts, reflecting Lafayette’s vast American land holdings. Affixed to a slightly larger sheet for preservation and in fine condition, with small areas of foxing.
Following his heroic service in both the American and French Revolutions, Lafayette returned to France only to face financial ruin after the turmoil of the French Revolution and his imprisonment during the Reign of Terror. To aid their beloved ally, the U.S. government and Lafayette’s friends in America granted him monetary funds and immense tracts of land in the newly acquired Louisiana Territory. Lafayette mortgaged these lands to secure funds, with debts owed to men like Baring and Parish.
The Lafayette handwriting has been thoroughly reviewed and CERTIFIED AUTHENTIC BY PSA/DNA EXPERT EXAMINATION and encapsulated using PSA/DNAs proprietary sonically-sealed technology – your assurance of absolute authenticity. UNCONDITIONALLY GUARANTEED GENUINE. An investment-quality acquisition for any collection.
