Legendary French aristocrat, Military Officer and international hero GILBERT DU MOTIER, the MARQUIS DE LAFAYETTE, scarce and desirable undated ("Tuesday Morning") handwritten letter dispatched from Paris to French Admiral Charles Baudin appealing a death sentence conviction and proposing prison reform, initialed/signed at conclusion as simply "L". An important letter from Lafayette, one of France's leading advocates of social and economic rehabilitation.

With original address panel and gorgeous, intact red wax "L / CUR NON" (WHY NOT) seal on verso. Lafayette adopted the motto, "Cur Non" for his coat of arms and joined the Freemasons who supported Enlightenment principles.

Lafayette’s reference to "commutation de peine" (commutation of sentence) in the letter aligns with his known support for more humane treatment of prisoners. In this letter, he suggests that a textile manufacturer advocate for a condemned worker, creating a symbolic bond between employer and employee, in particular appealing the recent conviction of "the one condemned to death in the latest list..."

Lafayette writes:

"Paris, Tuesday morning

I am leaving, my dear captain, at the moment of departure, and I want to share with you an idea that seemed very good to me. It would be for the cloth manufacturer to be among the first to request a commutation of sentence for the convicts, and in particular the one condemned to death in the latest list from the assizes (regional courts). This would create a link between the workers and their employer, the manufacturer’s commissioner.

I do hope that upon his return you will come back to La Grange. I also trust that the items you kindly agreed to purchase for me will please you. He will look forward to it eagerly, as well as to my gratitude.

A thousand tender regards to Madame Baudin. I am content in my heart.

. L .

Constable says to you: “To the citadel!”

This final phrase, likely spoken humorously by the “Constable,” could be interpreted as a lighthearted military-style send-off to a friend. Given Lafayette’s military background, such expressions were part of his affectionate, spirited tone.
