Postmarked at Washington, April 20 with a 'FREE' ink stamp over a portion of the signature.
Van Buren was the first U.S. President born in the United States, not an English colony. won the presidency in 1836 against divided Whig opponents. He lost re-election in 1849 and failed to win the Democratic nomination in 1844. Later in his life he re-emerged as an elder statesman and anti-slavery leader.
