NAPOLEON BONAPARTE, financial document signed in exile dated January 12, 1815 recommending payment for the head of the the Emperor's Music, and 9 additional musicians. The document is handwritten by a secretary, but is boldly and authentically signed by Napoleon himself along the side with a beautiful, dramatic flourish and a simple handwritten, "approuvé" (approved).


In January 1815, Napoleon was in exile on the island of Elba, serving as its sovereign ruler while secretly planning his return to power, just weeks before his return to France and the start of his disastrous "Hundred Days" campaign and ending in his humiliating defeat at Waterloo.
