OLIVER CROMWELL * PSA * 1654 LETTER SIGNED AS LORD PROTECTOR AUTOGRAPH

English Soldier, Statesman and Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, OLIVER CROMWELL letter signed from Whitehall sent February 24, 1654. Just 4 years after the execution of Charles I, Cromwell signs this letter inquiring on the innocence of a man who he would like to put in "command of one of the states". Having served only 5 years as Lord Protector autographs from Cromwell during this period are exceedingly scarce.

Addressed to "Gentlemen," the letter reads, in part, "Upon inquiry made confirming the stand off...against Capt. Blonfeild, I have as to my particular received satisfaction of his innocence and if you have not received satisfaction confirming it, I do find you forthwith to my old inquiry into that business and if...you shall find him to be innocent I would have you put him into the command of one of the states...but if upon inquiry you shall not...I do find you to give me an attempt thereof..." One of the most important and controversial figures in British history, Cromwell served as Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland, and Ireland from 1653 to 1658 after forcibly taking power. Cromwell rose to prominence during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms from 1639 to 1653, when he served as a commander in the Parliamentarian army and advocated for the execution of King Charles I and the exile of his son, Charles II.During his five-year reign, Cromwell fought to establish a stable government in England by eliminating his opposition. Although he claimed to promote republican initiatives, as soon as Parliament began to propose constitutional reforms, Cromwell dissolved the body and ruled unilaterally. Cromwell died in 1658 from disease and was buried in Westminster Abbey until Charles II returned in 1660, exhumed his body, and displayed his head on a spike outside of the Tower of London; There it remained for the next 25 years.
