Orville authentically signs a secretarially written check dated October 11, 1930 to "Fowlerton Bank" for $2.98.
Before turning their focus to aviation, Orville and Wilbur Wright originally were prominent bicycle designers, builders and retailers opening the Wright Cycle Exchange in Dayton, OH in 1892. Together, the Wright brothers built and flew the first successful, powered, controlled aircraft on December 17, 1903 near Kitty Hawk, NC, with Orville piloting the first 12-second flight that morning and four successful flights total that day.
By 1930, the 58 year old Wright was an elder statesman of aviation, living a relatively quiet life in Dayton focusing on philanthropy, engineering consultation – testing automobile aerodynamics with Chrysler – and protecting his legacy due to an ongoing dispute with the Smithsonian Institution over who invented the first airplane.
