ROBERT E LEE Autograph Letter U.S. ARMY CORPS ENGINEERS Signed * BAS Beckett

Confederate General and military commander ROBERT E. LEE early handwritten U.S. Army Corp of Engineers letter dated April 16, 1836 to Walter S. Franklin, Clerk of the House of Representatives seeking copies of the "revised report of the Board of Engineers on the defence (sic) of the Sea Board". Signed by Lee at conclusion as R.E. Lee / Ass[istan]t Ch[ief] Eng[ineer].

In full, Lee writes: 
"Walter S. Franklin Esqr / Clerk of the H of Reprs:
Engineer Department / Washington 16 April 1836

I have to request that you will send for the use of this Dept. two copies of Doc: 153, 19th Cong: 1st Sess: Containing the 'revised report of the Board of Engineers on the defence of the Sea Board March 24th 1826' should you be able to procure them at this time. I have the honor to be / Sir / Your very obt servant / By order"


Early in his military career, Lee served as an officer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. During this period he specialized in constructing coastal defenses and managing river improvements. As a Lieutenant, Lee supervised the engineering work for St. Louis Harbor and for the upper Mississippi and Missouri rivers. His work there earned him a promotion to Captain.
