Reagan attended the June 9, 1965 tribute as a guest of Ray C. Bliss, Chairman of the Republican Party, and whom is credited with rebuilding the Ohio GOP. That same year, it would be actor Reagan's ringing endorsement of Conservative candidate Barry Goldwater is crediting with igniting his political career, leading to the Governor's Office in California in 1967 – and later the Presidency in 1981.
