American Baptist Minister and author SAMUEL FRANCIS SMITH authentic fully handwritten stanza to AMERICA ("My Country 'Tis of Thee") in Smith's flowing calligraphic hand, signed and dated April 11, 1895. Smith adds that AMERICA was "Written in 1832".
Smith is best known for having written the lyrics to the legendary patriotic American anthem.
Smith writes,
"America
My country, 'tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty,
Of thee I sing;
Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrim's pride.
From every mountain side
Let freedom ring.
S.F. Smith
Written in 1832
April 11, 1895"
Condition is as shown, with toning, darker at edges, fold at midline, chip at upper right, wear consistent with age, use, handling. Previous signs of mounting to verso. Some scuffing to encapsulate. Document measures appx. 4.25" x 5.5" enclosed in 6.5" x 10" encapsulate.
