SUPREME COURT * PSA * Autograph 5x Waite Justices Signed WARD HUNT Stephen Field
Guaranteed Authentic
U.S. SUPREME COURT circa 1877 autograph album pages with the signatures of 5 justices including JOSEPH BRADLEY, WARD HUNT, SAMUEL MILLER, STEPHEN FIELD and WILLIAM STRONG with all justices denoting their roles on the court. Additionally, Associate Justice Field has inscribed, "Washington, Oct 15th, 1877". In 1877 the U.S. Supreme Court had just nine justices, a number set by the Judiciary Act of 1869.
Circa 1870s, key U.S. Supreme Court cases focused on Reconstruction-era issues, particularly the Fourteenth Amendment and new federal powers, with the Legal Tender Cases (Knox v. Lee / Parker v. Davis) upholding wartime paper money (Legal Tender Act) as constitutional, while the Slaughter-House Cases (1873) would significantly narrow federal power under the 14th Amendment, limiting its application to state actions rather than private ones, and cases like Minor v. Happersett (1875) addressed voting rights, though denying women suffrage.
