My Dear Mr Bliss,

On October 9, 1888, Theodore Roosevelt delivered remarks at New York City’s Federal Club amid the heated campaign season preceding the presidential election, where Benjamin Harrison would ultimately unseat Grover Cleveland. At this stage, Roosevelt was emerging as a prominent Republican reform advocate. In his address, he called for the elimination of patronage and corruption in government appointments, supported the party’s tariff policies as a driver of economic strength, and criticized Cleveland’s administration for falling short on its reform commitments.
