EDISON'S SIGNED AND SUBMITTED PATENT DRAWING FOR THE INCANDESCENT LAMP

Legendary "Wizard of Menlo Park" and inventor THOMAS EDISON incredible, authentic autograph oversized patent drawing for the "Electric Lamp", or incandescent lamp, signed in full at the bottom with an uncommon, full umbrella signature as, "Thomas Alva Edison" and countersigned by Charles H. Smith and George T. Pinckney as Witnesses.  Perhaps the single most consequential invention of the 19th and 20th centuries, the invention of the light bulb is routinely ranked among the top 5 most important inventions in human history.

This patent drawing was submitted as part of Edison's June 7, 1881, patent for "new and improved equipment for electric lamps and methods of manufacturing them" with the Republic of Bolivia.  For nearly a century, inventors and scientists worked to improve the incandescent electric light, each building upon the discoveries of those who came before. In 1800, Humphry Davy produced the first electric light by passing an electric current through carbon, creating what became known as the electric arc. Decades later, Joseph Swan developed one of the first practical incandescent lamps using a carbonized paper filament, though it still burned out quickly. Here, Thomas Edison submits his patent for further improvements to the incandescent light bulb, refining the technology into a longer-lasting and commercially viable form.

Edison understood the importance of securing international patent rights, particularly after an earlier setback involving his phonograph patents. In 1878, a British patent for several phonograph improvements was approved before the corresponding American filing, leading the U.S. Patent Office to reject Edison’s application on the grounds of prior publication. The experience profoundly influenced the order in which Edison later pursued patent approvals abroad, carefully timing international filings to protect his commercial interests and prevent competitors from exploiting his inventions.
