Legendary "Wizard of Menlo Park" and American Inventor THOMAS EDISON distinguished vintage matte-finish portrait by Walter Scott Shinn of New York, signed and inscribed in the lower border in fountain pen, “To our good friend, Hilliar, Thos. A. Edison.” 

Edison signed the portrait for W. J. Hilliar, William John Hilliar (1876–1936) was a British-born magician, vaudeville performer, and influential magic author best known for founding The Sphinx magazine, one of the most respected early journals devoted to the art of magic. According to sources he and Edison were intimate friends. Included with the sale is a photograph of Edison and Hilliar posed together.

Condition is as shown, with some foxing and toning to borders, trimmed top edge, minor blemish near photographer credit, some staining at lower left and right consistent with age, use, handling and display. Image measures appx. 7" x 9" as trimmed. Photograph of Edison and Hilliar has several tears to lower left side, some silvering but still a very nice association for the autograph!
