THOMAS EDISON * PSA * Autograph Re: RUBBER EXPERIMENT Note Signed * Florida 1931
Guaranteed Authentic
Legendary "Wizard of Menlo Park" and American Inventor THOMAS EDISON brief typewritten note dated March 6, 1931 from Fort Myers, Florida regarding a "Rubber Experiment", signed at conclusion with a terrific "umbrella"-style signature. Just 7 months later, Edison would pass away at the age of 84.
Edison responds to a note from Mrs. Henry Sterling, one of the founding families of Delray Beach. Her husband Henry had contacted Edison about investing in rubber plantations west of Delray, an idea that was eventually rejected. This note appears to be part of the related correspondence.
"Dear Madam -
We had 250 Carresa, called Natal Plum but destroyed most of them because the rubber was of poor quality and would not grow north as far as Tampa.
Thanks for calling my attention.
Yours very truly,
Thos A Edison"
In 1927, Edison, along with automotive pioneers Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone were concerned about America’s dependence on foreign rubber sources for its industrial enterprises. The three formed the Edison Botanic Research Corporation, and and built a laboratory in Fort Myers. Under Edison’s leadership, the corporation sought a source of rubber that could be grown and produced quickly in the U.S., in the event of a foreign supply shortage. After testing more than 17,000 plant samples, Edison eventually selected Goldenrod as the most suitable.
