IMPORTANT REVOLUTIONARY WAR-DATED JEFFERSON LAND GRANT ONLY MONTHS BEFORE YORKTOWN

Legendary Third President of the United States THOMAS JEFFERSON partly printed land grant signed as Governor of Virginia, from Richmond, February 1, 1781, in handsome vintage framed display. Jefferson signs at lower right. A museum-quality document in a museum-quality presentation.

Granted during the height of the Revolutionary War in 1781, Virginia quickly became the central theater of the Revolutionary War, with turncoat Benedict Arnold capturing and burning Richmond in January, and culminating in the decisive British defeat at Yorktown in October. It was also during this tumultuous time that British cavalry under Lt. Col Banastre Tarleton nearly captured Jefferson while at his Monticello home in June, with the wartime Governor fleeing just minutes before troops arrived.

In the document, the future third President of the United States grants 115 acres of land in Buckingham County to a Mr. James Boyd. During and immediately following the Revolutionary War, Jefferson made a practice of granting tracts of land in previously undeveloped areas, especially in the western portion of the colony, in part to encourage the establishment of a natural buffer against neighboring militant Indian tribes. The granting of tracts of land was an ideal match with Jefferson's keen interest in westward expansion.
