THOMAS ROBERT MALTHUS * BECKETT * HANDWRITTEN AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED ECONOMIST

Influential economist Thomas Robert Malthus handwritten letter signed 2x by Malthus. One of the most scarce autographs of any economist - the first one Beckett has ever certified authentic! Malthus autographs this letter once in text as "Malthus" and a second time at the conclusion of the letter "T Rob Malthus".

Malthus forwards payment to his engraver the same year his most famous portrait was created.In the letter Malthus writes from East India College to John Linnell the man responsible for the famous engraving of Malthus which we have featured in this listing (engraving is for reference only and not included in this sale). Malthus forwards payment to Linnell, perhaps paying him for his services rendered engraving the portrait of Malthus earlier that year.

Handwritten address panel also in Malthus' hand on reverse. Likely one of the last letters of Malthus ever sent, he would pass away just four months later.

Malthus has written:

"E I College August 22nd 1834 Dear Sir, I have just received from Coleman the sum of 11 pounds 10 shillings, which he requests me to remit to you by draft. I enclose you therefore a check on my bankers Messrs Hoace 37 (?) for the amount, the receipt of which I shall be obliged to you to acknowledge. I hope you have been quite well. Mrs Malthus and my daughter send their compliments. My son is in Devinshire. I am sir sincerely yours [signed] T Rob Malthus"

Letter measures approx. 9"x7.25". Uneven toning, ink still bold and legible.
