PRESIDENT GRANT ISSUES SHIP'S PASSPORT FOR INFAMOUS MARITIME SHIPWRECK THAT CLAIMED HER ENTIRE CREW

18th President of the United States ULYSSES S. GRANT autograph partly printed four language ship's passport for the whaling ship Josephine, dated September 25, 1871. Countersigned by U.S. Secretary of State, HAMILTON FISH, and featuring largely intact embossed Great Seal of the United States affixed at bottom.

Grant issues the maritime passport providing safe passage in international waters for the long-range whaling ship Josephine, bound for the Pacific Ocean carrying provisions, utensils and stores. A historic 19th century American bark, the ship undertook multiple documented voyages into the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. Having served the U.S. whaling industry for over three decades, the Josephine was eventually sold and later lost at sea with all hands aboard in a violent storm in 1919. To this day the ship remains lost at sea, having been lost for over 100 years.
