Beloved American Poet WALT WHITMAN impressively large autograph across an engraving of him which was removed from the 1883 edition of his magnum opus Leaves of Grass. Whitman signs above his image "Walt Whitman" and inscribes the date "June 9 '86". An exceptionally clean image signed by Whitman without dedication - a truly superb example.
This iconic of Whitman featuring his image was taken by Napoleon Sarony. Whitman has remarked of this photo "it is one of my good-humored pictures...This is strong enough to be right and gentle enough to be right too: I like to be both: I wouldn't like people to say 'he is a giant' and then forget I know how to love'".

Condition is as shown, framed in a the signed engraving is matted to a size of 4.5" x 6.25", the overall frame measures 10.5" x 16.5". One crease traveling through the "W" in Whitman's last name. Very small are of vertical scattered ink traveling through the "W" in Walt. The signed image has been professionally framed under 99% UV-blocking Tru Vue Museum Glass.
