9th President of the United States WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON exceedingly scarce autographed engraved portrait signed in ink below the image as "Gen W.H. Harrison". Certainly the earliest known signed Presidential portrait.
The extreme rarity of this particular image can hardly be exaggerated; This is the first and earliest image ever signed by a President. While his Presidential predecessors, Martin Van Buren and John Quincy Adams also signed portraits – both signed their portrait years or more after the signing of this engraving. (Harrison died in 1841). Previous to the discovery of this signed engraving the earliest known signed image of a President was signed by John Quincy Adams in 1842.
Additionally, the Sanders Price Guide to Autographs notes "...there are no known SP [signed portraits] of W.H. Harrison", making this recent discovery the only known example extant.
The Harrison signature is penned on an integral tab left in place when the engraving was trimmed at an earlier date. The engraving is in turn affixed to the former front free end page, now removed from a book that was in poor condition and had since fallen apart.

A son of Benjamin Harrison V who was a U.S. Founding Father, WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON was also the grandfather of Benjamin Harrison, the 23rd U.S. president. Serving from March 4 to April 4, 1841, Harrison had the shortest presidency in U.S. history. He was also the first U.S. President to die in office, having served just 30 days.
